Medallion of a bridge and minaret

Born in Novi Šeher, Bosnia and Herzegovina, he began his professional career as a teacher in his hometown, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for language, education, and the preservation of cultural identity. The outbreak of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina profoundly altered the course of his life. Together with his wife and their young son, he sought refuge in the United States, where he embarked upon a new chapter marked by perseverance, hard work, and academic achievement.

After arriving in the United States, Mr. Mulasmajić worked a variety of jobs while continuing his education. His commitment to lifelong learning led him to earn a bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies, followed by a master’s degree in Islamic studies, and ultimately a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Islamic Banking and Finance. Throughout his professional career, he has combined scholarly pursuits with practical experience, most recently serving as a linguist, a role that further deepened his engagement with language and lexicography.

Medallion of an open dictionary

The creation of the Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian–English Dictionary grew from his conviction that languages must be actively preserved if they are to remain vibrant and relevant for future generations. Concerned that countless traditional words, idioms, expressions, regionalisms, and culturally significant terms were gradually disappearing from everyday use, he undertook the ambitious task of compiling a comprehensive reference work that would safeguard this linguistic heritage while making it accessible to modern readers, translators, researchers, students, and language enthusiasts.

Years in the making, this dictionary represents a rare achievement in contemporary lexicography. Distinguished by its extraordinary breadth and depth, it brings together standard vocabulary, regional expressions, colloquialisms, idioms, technical terminology, loanwords, religious expressions, and cultural references rarely found within a single work. The result is not merely a dictionary, but a linguistic archive and a celebration of the rich cultural traditions of the BCMS-speaking world.

For Dr. Mulasmajić, language is more than a means of communication—it is a living repository of history, memory, identity, and collective experience. His work reflects a deep belief that preserving words is also a way of preserving people, cultures, and generations.

Medallion of the Chicago skyline

Today, he resides in Chicago, Illinois, with his family. He is a devoted husband to his wife, Nevenka, a proud father to his son, Nemanja, a grateful father-in-law to Ana, and an adoring grandfather to his beloved granddaughter, Maeve, whose presence continues to inspire hope for the future and the importance of preserving the past.

“A language lives as long as its words are remembered, understood, and passed on to future generations.”
